Historic Kenwood in St. Pete, FL
The client envisioned a front yard that resembled ocean waves folding onto one another — bold, layered, and full of movement and color. Working closely together, we developed a design that used texture, hierarchy, and depth to bring that vision to life through Florida native and Florida-friendly plants.
The existing shell within the landscape was thoughtfully preserved and repurposed to act as the “sand” or shoreline weaving throughout the garden. We also incorporated the neighboring property’s large palm tree into the overall composition by framing it with Areca palms, adding privacy while still honoring and highlighting the beauty of the existing canopy. The result was an immersive, artistic landscape that feels vibrant, coastal, and deeply connected to its environment.

“I just completed Phase I of my landscaping project in Historic Kenwood in St Petersburg. I chose to work with Sara of Toftegaard Design for many reasons. She came highly recommended by my home designer, she is very communicative and upfront, and she is known for her expertise in unique garden designs using Florida native plants. She was a great pleasure to work with and really dug in there with me as we pushed the limits on what was possible and affordable. I have a very small yard and she was able to create a very lovely design that emphasizes the strengths of my recently remodeled home. I was so pleased and moved with the final reveal that I asked if I could hug her. There is something uniquely wonderful about looking at your home and seeing it transformed. I have been calling family and friends to come over and see the final result. What a wonderful experience!!!”
