What is Re-wilding?
Rewilding is a progressive approach to conservation. It's about letting nature take care of itself, enabling natural processes to shape land and sea, repair damaged ecosystems, and restore degraded landscapes. Through rewilding, wildlife's natural rhythms create wilder, more biodiverse habitats.
“A perfect, 4" tall, green lawn.”
How has grass lawn become the general consensus of a “low maintenance” yard?
Regardless of the size of the space, maintaining it still requires effort. You either need to bring out the lawn mower at least four times a month or hire a team that spends most of their time wielding noisy gas blowers, disrupting your peaceful mornings or evenings. Additionally, they use herbicides and pesticides like Round Up, which can silently harm your health and that of your loved ones, contribute to the decline of beneficial insects, and cause red tide. Furthermore, using overhead watering leads to quick evaporation, and doesn't get to the root of the grass, making it an inefficient method.
At Toftegaard Design we are incorporating re-wilding and regenerative practices into residential yards. Did you know that by planting more species in groupings or guilds you have a lower percent chance of establishing weeds. Weeds are more common to spread in open areas of the yard, and where the soil is lose.
Rewilding also means changing the way we think. Humans are part of the wild. We are one species among many, bound together in an intricate web of life that ties us to the atmosphere, the weather, the tide, the soils, the freshwater, the oceans, and all living creatures on the planet.
The Earth is our home. Together, we can protect and restore it.
